Gifts to Get Ready for the Office
Salon visit – Get a gift card that covers the cost of a cut and blow dry with her favorite stylist.
Find out her favorite (and most convenient-to-her) nail salon and buy another gift card. If lack of childcare prevents her from running out and using these cards, see if you can help solve that problem, too!
Beauty – Makeup and beauty products are such personal decisions! A gift card might be the best bet here!
Wardrobe update – After a few years out of the workforce, a stay at home mom’s wardrobe may no longer include the suits or business casual attire she may be expected to wear in her new job.
Does she already have a favorite clothing retailer?
Find the perfect gift card today (physical cards as well as e-mail delivery options available.) Help her return to work with confidence!
Is she struggling to find time to run to the department store before her return to work?
Help fund a mini return-to-work shopping spree with Stitch Fix. Cover the $20 styling fee and perhaps a bit more to cover the first outfit, and your mom, daughter, wife or friend will receive a selection of pieces that fit her tastes, needs and budget.
How do you know if the discount code worked? After clicking the discount link above, you will see a banner that says “Your 1st Styling Fee is on us if you order within..” Then, you’re good to go!
She’ll try the styled wardrobe on in her own home, and only keep (and pay for) those that she loves! Just click the FAQ link on the website to learn more.
Shoes – A mom going back to work may need to upgrade her footwear as well. Consider a Zappos or DSW giftcard.
Gifts for a Warm Welcome at the Office
Thoughtful card – Send her a thoughtful card to her home, sharing your joy for her new adventure. Here are some great options if you can’t run out to the store.
Flowers – Flowers are the old-stand-by for a reason… their unexpected arrival makes for a pleasant surprise.
A simple bouquet of flowers and a card are a nice way to brighten up the first few days back in the office or welcome her home at the end of the day.
Did you know you can even order flowers through Amazon?
Starbucks or restaurant gift card – Returning to work after being at home, and adjusting to her new routine, may give mom a few sleepless nights.
A gift card for a dose of morning caffeine from Starbucks (or the closest coffee shop to the office) might be well-appreciated!
Snacks “emergency” kit – Put together a simple welcome back “emergency” kit from the grocery store.
Pick up a medium sized plastic container with lid (that will fit in a desk drawer) and include trail mix, breakfast bars, chocolate or gum. Stick a bow on it, and you’re done!
If there’s no place to stash this kit at work, make it for the car, for before and after work snacks! (Just try to include less chocolate!)
Spare charger – She’ll be away from home for more hours per day, but she’ll want to keep her mobile device charged up.
Instead of having to take a cable back and forth from home or the car, gift a spare charger for her to keep at the office! Just be sure to double check what style of phone before you shop!
Personalize the desk – Depending on her job, she’ll be spending much (or all) of her day at her desk. A cute set of pens or pretty sticky notes (and flags!) can brighten up a little corner of her office.
A small box of greeting cards and stamps can keep her on top of birthdays, graduations and other special events. Save her a run to the store during her work day!
Organize for meetings with a folio – Will she be in and out of meetings? Consider one of these folios, at several price points.
Business card holder – Will she be networking with businesses or recruiting clients in her new job? This could come in handy for her new business cards!
Gifts for an Easier Commute
Here are a collection of ideas to smooth out her commute, whether by train, car or foot.
Mobile device charger – Driving to and from work? One or two of these will keep her mobile devices charged up during her rides, drives or walks to work.
Canvas bag – Yes, she might already have a ton of random bags at home. But, they’ve all probably been well-used at daycare, sports practice or trips to the beach.
A fresh, professional and affordable gift, this bag can help her stay organized to and from work each day.
Rain gear – A fresh umbrella for car or office, plus a pair of cute boots to save the nice office shoes. (Boots are a great option for anybody who walks or takes public transportation to work!)
Gifts to Get in a Good Routine at Home
Amazon Prime – Are you buying for a mom that does not already have Amazon Prime? Especially for a mom going back to work, ordering from Amazon can be a huge time saver.
If it’s something she is interested in, consider gifting a subscription or simply a gift card.
Audible – Consider gifting audiobooks for her commute. She can also choose to try out a free trial of an Audible subscription, she’ll receive 2 free audiobooks.
Food and beverage – Keep the cold stuff cold and the hot stuff hot to, from and during work. Here are some highly reviewed options, including my own favorite thermos and water bottle that I use regularly.
Cash for childcare – If her return to work requires any childcare arrangements (even if just before or after school care), consider a simple gift of cash to help her cover the costs of childcare.
Especially in the long weeks before she receives her first paycheck, this cash will be helpful!
Grocery Shopping – Yes! Amazon now delivers groceries as well as all our other stuff!
Before getting too excited, check to see if the service is available in your area. At the time of this post (November 2017), the service was still rolling out in larger cities, and not yet available nationwide.
Log in to your Amazon account. Then, below the black Amazon banner and white text menus (on desktop), you’ll see a “Deliver to” menu option. Only addresses in the service area will appear in this pull-down list.
If the service is available, tell the new mom about it (forward this link.) And, buy her an Amazon Gift Card!. If she decides not to try Amazon Fresh (or if the service is not yet in your area), she can still use your gift for diapers, wipes and all her other essentials.
Not certain about what she wants, needs or likes? This gift card is a pretty safe great option.
Another grocery store that she prefers?
That store may also already offer a delivery or curb-side pickup service. If her store offers delivery or pickup, buy a grocery store gift card.
Before You Buy…
Most of the links above are for products available on Amazon.com.
Sometimes Amazon prices are the absolute best deal, and other times, Amazon is just the most convenient source (but best value, not so much.)
If you’re shopping via Chrome browser, take an extra minute to download the Honey extension to price check. Check out tip #2 here for my screenshare of the Honey extension at work.
If you’re not sure about her current needs but want to surprise her, you can ask if she has an Amazon Wish List or try your best to buy something from an online retailer with a bricks-and-mortar store close to her.
